Paris born Jean Kalman studied philosophy before taking on a career as a lighting designer in 1979. In his earlier period, he worked mostly in the field of theatre and musicals. In 1998, he lit his first opera, Pique Dame by Tchaikovsky in Amsterdame, which led him quickly to the prestigious Paris Opera with The Carmelites and Salome, Don Giovanni in Toulouse, La traviata in Vienna and Don Carlos in Moscow. He has collaborated with a large number of well-known directors, inclusing Robert Carsen, Deborah Warner, Pierre Audi and Adrian Noble. His works are often to be seen in houses like Covent Garden, La Scala, Metropolitan and the Vienna Staatsoper.
