Madama Butterfly
One of the sweet yet tragic figures of Italian opera, Madama Butterfly touches our hearts today, as she did at the opera´s 1904 premiere.
The director Damiano Michieletti shows us that the story is timeless: "The broken wings of Butterfly" he says, are also "a contemporary tragedy".
As we meet a fragile young woman sold as a bride-to-be in contemporary Nagasaki, Michieletto shows us realism, compassion, loyalty destroyed and broken beauty: the opera is all its heartbreaking power.
In Grieghallen, with Eun Sun Kim conducting the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra, we have a superb cast led by Korean soprano Sae Kyung Rim as Cio-Cio-San, and young Kosovar star Rame Lahaj as Pinkerton.
NB: The production is very realistic and contains scenes which may not be suitable for children.
