Katie Mitchell

Katie Mitchell is a British theatre and opera director whose career spans more than 30 years and over 100 productions in the UK and internationally. She has been an Associate Director at the Royal Shakespeare Company, the National Theatre and the Royal Court, and is a resident director at the Schaubühne in Berlin and the Deutsches Schauspielhaus in Hamburg. She has directed opera at leading institutions and festivals including the Royal Opera House, English National Opera, Staatsoper Berlin and the Festival d’Aix-en-Provence.

Her opera productions include Written on Skin, Lessons in Love and Violence, Pelléas et Mélisande, Alcina and Theodora. Mitchell is known for her naturalistic and psychologically precise directing, often incorporating film and live video. She was appointed OBE in 2009 and received the International Opera Award for Best Director in 2019.
