Eivind Gullberg Jensen has conducted the Berliner Philharmoniker as well as the stars at Wiener Staatsoper. From 2021 he is Artistic and General Director of Bergen National Opera, with his first programming season 20/21.
Eivind Gullberg Jensen from Norway studied conducting in Stockholm with Jorma Panula, and in Vienna with Leopold Hager. Previously he studied violin and musical theory in Trondheim in his home country Norway.
For five years he was Music Director for the NDR Radiophilharmonie in Hannover 2009-2014, and has conducted at several leading opera houses, including cities like Munich, Zurich and Rome. He has also performed with prominent orchestras such as the Berliner Philharmoniker, the London Philharmonic Orchestra and the Mahler Chamber Orchestra.
Spring 2017, he directed Alex Ollé's production of The Flying Dutchman at Opéra de Lille. Shortly afterwards he was the first Norwegian to conduct at the prestigious Wiener Staatsoper, with Tosca starring Angela Gheorghiu and Jonas Kaufmann, before returning in the autumn with Puccini's La bohème. Autumn 2018 he also conducted Rusalka there.
He has also conducted operas like Stravinsky's The Rake's Progress at the Aix-en-Provence Festival (Summer 2017) and Oedipus Rex performed as a concert together with Strauss’ Elektra at the Finnish National Opera in Helsinki (Autumn 2019). At Bergen International Festival (Festspillene i Bergen) 2019 he conducted the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra in the world premiere of Waiting (Venter) - with music by Grieg and lyrics by Lars Ove Knausgård - directed by Calixto Bieito, and with his wife, soprano Mari Eriksmoen as soloist.
