Bára Gísladóttir

The young Icelandic composer and double bassist Bára Gísladóttir has received several awards, and is also an activ performer of her own music. In Mai 2020 we are looking forward to the world premiere of her chamber opera here in Bergen.

Bára Gísladóttir (b. 1989) is an Icelandic composer and double bassist based in Copenhagen. Her music has been performed by ensembles and orchestras such as Ensemble InterContemporain, Frankfurt Radio Symphony, Iceland Symphony Orchestra, Siggi String Quartet and TAK Ensemble.

Bára is an active performer and regularly plays her own music. In addition to this, she is the double bassist of Elja Ensemble, Skark Ensemble, and the Balkan-band Orphic Oxtra.

Gísladóttir ´s pieces have been selected for festivals such as Dark Music Days, International Rostrum of Composers, and Ung Nordisk Musik. She has received the Carl Nielsen and Anne Marie Carl-Nielsen Foundation’s Talent Award (2019), the Léonie Sonning Talent Prize (2018), the Reykjavík Grapevine's Music Awards, and been nominated to The Icelandic Music Awards.

Bára has released three albums; Different Rooftops (2015), B R I M S L Ó Ð (2016) and Mass for some (2017). She is currently working on a new album in collaboration with the composer and bass guitarist Skúli Sverrisson, as well as a new solo album, to be released in 2019.

Bára Gísladóttir is one of the two composers comissioned by Bergen National Opera and Íslenska óperan (The Islandic Opera) to write an chamber opera each to be world premiered at Bergen International Festival in Mai 2020.
